The Curse of the Rispin Mansion

Frederick Augustus Hihn wasn’t just a land developer—he was one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Santa Cruz County, and he built his influence through long-term integration, not sudden extraction.

🧱 Key aspects of Hihn’s rootedness:

  • German immigrant who arrived in California during the Gold Rush, but quickly turned to entrepreneurship rather than mining.
  • Built businesses across sectors: drugstore, water systems, railroads, lumber mills, and the famous Camp Capitola resort.
  • Owned land but also invested in infrastructure, such as the Santa Cruz–Watsonville Railroad, making him indispensable to regional development.
  • He lived among the people—not above them—and helped shape civic life (though he certainly profited greatly).

🌊 Hihn’s version of development:

He built with and for the communities, with a mindset of permanence. He was no utopian—but he knew the power of grounding investments in useful systems (like water and transit), not just luxury or tourism.

Fragility

The emergent property of their moral absence is fragility.

When wealth concentrates without corresponding public investment, the unintended outcome is systemic fragility.

When money becomes the only metric for “deserved” or “earned” stability, accumulating more while the structure underneath rots…ensures fragility.

Doctor’s Orders

Environmental Medicine: Prescriptions for Curse-Types

A reframing of “medicine” as environmental adjustment rather than individual correction.

Core Reframe

Old Model:
If you are suffering, something is wrong with you.

Environmental Medicine Model:
Suffering arises when a stable orientation is placed in a hostile, mismatched, or extractive environment.

A prescription is therefore:

  • an adjustment to incentives
  • an adjustment to pacing
  • an adjustment to roles
  • an adjustment to social contracts

Not pills.
Not compliance.
Context correction.

Variables That Turn Orientation Into Affliction

Affliction intensifies when environments exhibit:

  1. Temporal Compression
    Everything must pay off immediately.

  2. Performative Optimism
    Bad news is socially punished.

  3. Role Ambiguity
    Responsibility without authority.

  4. Attention Scarcity
No space for depth, synthesis, or reflection.

  5. Individualized Blame
Systemic failures privatized as personal weakness.

Environmental medicine targets these variables, not the individual.

Prescriptions by Curse-Type

Cassandra Curse (Future-Locked)

Affliction Source:
Short-term incentives + punishment of foresight.

Prescriptions:

  • Protected early-warning roles
  • Formal logging of minority forecasts
  • Cultural normalization of false positives

Required Social Shift:
“Nothing bad happened” ≠ “the warning was wrong.”

Atlas Curse (Structural-Bearing)

Affliction Source:
Invisible labor + moralization of endurance.

Prescriptions:

  • Explicit load-mapping
  • Rotating responsibility
  • Permission to refuse overload before collapse

Required Social Shift:
Reliability must stop being silently exploited.

Diogenes Curse (Truth-Oriented)

Affliction Source:
Comfort prioritized over accuracy.

Prescriptions:

  • Role-bound truth-telling
  • Separation of tone from content
  • Reward ethical hygiene

Required Social Shift:
Politeness ≠ goodness.

Orpheus Curse (Depth-Mismatch)

Affliction Source:
Speed culture + emotional minimalism.

Prescriptions:

  • Slow, opt-in depth spaces
  • Emotional literacy norms
  • Valuing meaning-making as labor

Required Social Shift:
Depth must stop being treated as pathology.

Sisyphus Curse (Futility-Aware)

Affliction Source:
Performative reform loops.

Prescriptions:

  • Metrics distinguishing motion from progress
  • Permission to exit dead loops
  • Leadership honesty about failure

Required Social Shift:
Hope must stop being faked.

Prometheus Curse (Innovation-Forward)

Affliction Source:
Ideas arriving before infrastructure.

Prescriptions:

  • Protected incubation zones
  • Clear attribution norms
  • Translator roles between vision and execution

Required Social Shift:
Novelty must stop being punished for inconvenience.

Janus Curse (Dual-Sight)

Affliction Source:
Binary moral frameworks.

Prescriptions:

  • Formal synthesis roles
  • Education rewarding tension-holding
  • Cultural legitimacy of “both/and” outcomes

Required Social Shift:
Certainty must stop being the primary currency.

Echo Curse (Attunement-Forward)

Affliction Source:
One-way emotional labor.

Prescriptions:

  • Reciprocal check-in norms
  • Explicit recognition of care labor
  • Boundaries protecting attunement

Required Social Shift:
Care must stop being invisible.

Tantalus Curse (Near-Miss)

Affliction Source:
Chronic under-resourcing + dangling incentives.

Prescriptions:

  • Stable baseline support
  • Fewer “almost” opportunities
  • Systems that complete trajectories

Required Social Shift:
Potential must stop being farmed without harvest.

Watcher Curse (Meta-Aware)

Affliction Source:
Mandatory participation in broken games.

Prescriptions:

  • Legitimate observer / analyst roles
  • Permission to opt out without penalty
  • Governance that listens to meta-feedback

Required Social Shift:
Participation must stop being mandatory theater.

Cross-Cutting Societal Shifts

To reduce affliction across all curse-types:

  1. Stop optimizing exclusively for short-term comfort
  2. Distinguish harmony from health
  3. Treat perceptual variance as functional roles
  4. Design environments for variance, not averages
  5. Replace “fix the person” with “fix the fit”

Summary

Curses are not flaws to be fixed.
They are signals without habitat.

Environmental medicine restores habitat.

When the gift is a curse

Catalog of Curse-Types (v1)

A mythic–psychological taxonomy of recurring human misalignment patterns.

Working Definition

A curse-type is a stable orientation of perception, attention, or values that:

  • Would be advantageous in some worlds or eras
  • Produces friction, isolation, or self-erosion in the current social configuration
  • Recurs historically as a recognizable pattern
  • Is often punished rather than rewarded

Most curse-types share:

  • Difficulty relating to peers
  • Chronic “Why doesn’t anyone else see this?”
  • Being out of phase with dominant incentives

Curses are not pathologies.
They are unplaced adaptations.

1. The Cassandra Curse (Future-Locked)

Orientation: Time-forward
Sees: Downstream consequences, slow disasters, systemic trajectories
Gift: Foresight, early warning, long-range coherence
Social Symptom: Dismissed as alarmist, negative, or overreacting
Core Pain: Being right too early is treated as being wrong

Notes:

  • Grief for futures others haven’t reached
  • Alienation via asymmetrical awareness

2. The Atlas Curse (Structural-Bearing)

Orientation: Responsibility-heavy
Sees: Load distribution, hidden dependencies, silent failure points
Gift: Stability, continuity, reliability
Social Symptom: Others unconsciously offload onto you
Core Pain: Collapse when you finally set the weight down

Often misread as “strength.”

3. The Diogenes Curse (Truth-Intolerant Environment)

Orientation: Radical honesty
Sees: Social theater, unspoken power, polite lies
Gift: Clarity, ethical hygiene
Social Symptom: Labeled rude, cynical, or antisocial
Core Pain: Punished for naming what everyone privately knows

4. The Orpheus Curse (Depth-Mismatch)

Orientation: Emotional / symbolic depth
Sees: Layered meaning, grief beneath joy, love beneath conflict
Gift: Translation of the unspeakable
Social Symptom: “Too intense,” “overthinking,” “bringing the mood down”
Core Pain: Required to surface alone before others can follow

Common among artists, caregivers, interpreters.

5. The Sisyphus Curse (Futility Awareness)

Orientation: Process-locked awareness
Sees: Repeating failure loops, performative reform, circular labor
Gift: Realism about effort vs. outcome
Social Symptom: Accused of negativity or disengagement
Core Pain: Asked to push the rock while pretending this time is different

Burnout-prone.

6. The Prometheus Curse (Premature Insight)

Orientation: Innovation-forward
Sees: Tools, frameworks, or models before conditions support them
Gift: Creation, catalytic ideas
Social Symptom: Punished for disruption
Core Pain: Watching stolen or misused ideas reshape the world poorly

Distinct from Cassandra: focuses on creation, not warning.

7. The Janus Curse (Dual-Sight)

Orientation: Multiperspectival
Sees: Multiple truths simultaneously
Gift: Synthesis, mediation
Social Symptom: Mistrusted by absolutists
Core Pain: Forced to choose sides when truth is plural

Exiled by polarized systems.

8. The Echo Curse (Unreciprocated Recognition)

Orientation: Attunement-forward
Sees: Others clearly
Gift: Validation, mirroring, emotional literacy
Social Symptom: Rarely seen in return
Core Pain: Becoming invisible through usefulness

Quiet. Deeply erosive.

9. The Tantalus Curse (Proximity Without Access)

Orientation: Near-miss fulfillment
Sees: What almost works
Gift: Refinement instincts
Social Symptom: Constant deferral (“soon,” “not yet”)
Core Pain: Enough hope to keep trying, never enough to arrive

Common in under-resourced brilliance.

10. The Watcher Curse (Meta-Awareness)

Orientation: Observer-level cognition
Sees: Incentives, scripts, games, systems
Gift: Strategic clarity
Social Symptom: Difficulty participating sincerely
Core Pain: Forced to act as if you don’t know it’s a performance

Mistaken for detachment or superiority.

Shared Pattern

“I don’t relate to my peers” is not incidental.

Curses create:

  • Temporal mismatch
  • Depth mismatch
  • Responsibility mismatch
  • Perceptual mismatch

Society optimizes for:

  • Present comfort
  • Narrative simplicity
  • Plausible deniability

Misalignment ≠ malfunction.

Reframe

Curses are not flaws to be fixed.
They are signals without habitat.

Damage occurs when a curse-type is denied:

  • Its proper role
  • Its pacing
  • Its relational ecology

Catalog version: v1
Intended for reflection, not diagnosis.

Where the Pain Goes in a Hostile System

When a system is structurally hostile, pain does not disappear — it is displaced. People do not get to opt out of pain; they only get to choose where it lands.

Modern survival pathways tend to funnel pain into three dominant modes:

Domination

“I will survive by climbing over someone else.”

  • Overwork framed as virtue
  • Acceptance of cruelty as “just how it is”
  • Control, hierarchy, or authority used as insulation

This mode often looks like success.
Its cost is paid in empathy, relational presence, and downstream harm — frequently absorbed by children and dependents.

Denial

“I will pretend this is fine.”

  • Minimization of loss and instability
  • Normalization of burnout and precarity
  • Framing suffering as inevitable or personal failure

Denial preserves surface functionality, but fractures reality.
Children perceive this fracture even when it is never named.

Self-Erasure

“I will disappear so nothing gets worse.”

  • Shrinking personal needs
  • Treating the body as an expendable machine
  • Sacrificing rest, care, and interior life

This mode is especially common among conscientious caregivers.
It keeps others afloat while quietly hollowing out the self.

Resisting all three is not weakness.
It is costly because it refuses to relocate pain onto others, reality, or the self.

2026-01-28 22:26:15

Embodiment Under Precarity (Why “Self-Care” Fails Here)

Under sustained financial and existential precarity, the body often stops feeling like a place one lives and starts feeling like a thing one drags along.

In this state:

  • The body feels unsafe or unreliable
  • Re-entering physical awareness can trigger anxiety
  • “Wellness” language feels insulting or impossible

This is not a failure of discipline or motivation.
It is a protective dissociation.

Reframing Care

Care is not optimization.
Care is re-inhabitation without improvement demands.

“Honoring the water within the body” can mean:

  • Taking a few slow sips of water and noticing the sensation
  • Washing hands and attending to temperature
  • Sitting or lying down without distraction for one or two minutes

These acts are not about health outcomes.
They are about restoring the sense that the body is a place one is allowed to exist.

Embodiment, here, is not self-improvement.
It is a refusal to abandon the self under pressure.

2026-01-28 22:25:52

Parenting, Presence, and Structural Harm

In a system that prioritizes productivity over caregiving, parents are routinely told:

“Just get a job.”

This advice ignores a central tradeoff:

  • Economic survival is often purchased with parental absence
  • Absence produces under-raised children, regardless of intent

Choosing presence under constraint is not moral superiority.
It is often the only viable option for parents who refuse to convert love into neglect.

Structural Reality

  • Job loss during maternity or caregiving periods is systemic, not personal
  • Housing instability frequently follows employment shocks
  • Caregivers absorb the fallout of market volatility first

Remaining present in these conditions requires resisting:

  • Domination (sacrificing others)
  • Denial (pretending harm is benign)
  • Self-erasure (disappearing entirely)

Legacy Beyond Assets

Children inherit more than property or savings:

  • They inherit what adults normalize
  • They inherit whether suffering is named or hidden
  • They inherit whether systems are unquestionable

A parent who stays awake, present, and humane under pressure transmits:

  • Emotional legitimacy
  • Ethical clarity
  • The knowledge that care matters even when the world devalues it

This form of legacy is rarely rewarded by modern systems —
but it shapes people long before money ever does.

Anime Anonymous — Episode 1 Cold Open

Scene: Cold Open (No Exposition)

INT. COMMUNITY CENTER ROOM — EVENING

Fluorescent lights. Beige walls. Folding chairs in a circle.
A crooked sign taped to the door:

ANIME ANONYMOUS
Please silence background music.

A coffee urn steams ominously on a plastic table. No one is touching it.

Characters sit in the circle. They do not make eye contact.

  • A HAREM PROTAGONIST sits too straight, hands folded like he’s waiting for a cue.
  • A TSUNDERE aggressively avoids eye contact.
  • A NOSEBLEED GUY already has a tissue ready.
  • A MAGICAL GIRL is smiling. Too much.
  • A VILLAIN sits slightly outside the circle. No one asked him to move. He just did.

At the center is the CHAIRPERSON
(Recovery of an MMO Junkie energy: calm, adult, unhurried).

He checks the clock.

Dialogue

CHAIRPERSON
Okay. Let’s start.

Everyone stiffens.

CHAIRPERSON
Same reminders as always.
No power scaling.
No flashbacks longer than thirty seconds.
No blaming the audience.

A beat.

CHAIRPERSON
And no one is allowed to say,
“That’s just how my genre works,”
and then stop talking.

A few characters swallow.

CHAIRPERSON
You don’t have to share.
But if you do, we’re going to stay curious longer than is comfortable.

Silence.

The HAREM PROTAGONIST raises his hand halfway. Stops. Lowers it. Raises it again.

CHAIRPERSON
Go ahead.

HAREM PROTAGONIST
Everyone likes me.
I don’t know why.
I keep waiting for the right answer to appear.

A pause.

CHAIRPERSON
Has it yet?

HAREM PROTAGONIST
…No.

CHAIRPERSON
Then the system is protecting you from choosing.

Murmurs ripple through the group.

The TSUNDERE scoffs.

TSUNDERE
At least people like him.

The Chairperson turns to her, gently.

CHAIRPERSON
Do they like you?

She opens her mouth. Closes it.

Suddenly — the NOSEBLEED GUY sprays red.

Everyone jumps.

MAGICAL GIRL
Oh my god! Are you okay?!

NOSEBLEED GUY
I’m fine! I’m fine!
This just—
This is what happens when—
When—

He can’t finish.

The Chairperson hands him another tissue.

CHAIRPERSON
What happened right before?

The room goes quiet.

NOSEBLEED GUY
…Someone looked at me like they expected something.

No laughter. That’s new.

The MAGICAL GIRL’s smile trembles.

MAGICAL GIRL
If I stop smiling, everything falls apart.

The Chairperson waits.

CHAIRPERSON
What falls apart first?

She thinks. Actually thinks.

MAGICAL GIRL
…Me.

The VILLAIN laughs — once. Short. Bitter.

VILLAIN
Must be nice to be allowed to talk.

Everyone turns.

VILLAIN
Every time I explain myself, someone draws a sword.

A beat.

CHAIRPERSON
Because explanations slow the plot.

The Villain blinks. That landed.

The Chairperson looks around the circle.

CHAIRPERSON
Notice something?

No one answers.

CHAIRPERSON
You’re all very good at surviving scenes.
You’re terrible at staying in moments.

Listening silence.

The Chairperson stands.

CHAIRPERSON
That’s time.

Groans. A few protests.

RANDOM CHARACTER
So… what do we do when we go back?

The Chairperson picks up his bag.
Pauses at the door.

CHAIRPERSON
You’ll probably repeat your pattern.

A small, kind smile.

CHAIRPERSON
But maybe you’ll notice five seconds earlier.

He flips the light switch.

End

Anime Anonymous — Meta-Anime Concept

Core Premise

A meta-anime where characters from different anime genres attend a support group together, fully self-aware of:

  • their tropes
  • their genre constraints
  • their narrative loops
  • their unfinished or stalled character arcs

The space is neutral, low-stakes, and explicitly non-plot-advancing.

Rule of the room:
You are not here to fix your story.
You are here to understand what keeps repeating.

This functions as both satire and instruction.

Chairperson

Male Lead from Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Why him:

  • Emotionally literate
  • Calm, non-performative maturity
  • Experienced with mediated intimacy
  • Comfortable with awkwardness without self-annihilation
  • Not trying to “win” romance, power, or status

Role:

  • Facilitates reflection, not solutions
  • Names patterns gently
  • Models repair language and emotional pacing
  • Represents a character who is post-instruction, not pre-growth

Opening line energy:

“This isn’t about fixing your arc.
It’s about noticing what the system rewards.”

Structural Insight

Anime often:

  • Validates emotional paralysis
  • Externalizes anxiety through tropes (nosebleeds, tsundere hostility, freeze responses)
  • Depicts states but not skills

Anime Anonymous exists to:

  • Translate feelings into language
  • Replace symptoms with reflection
  • Model social learning without didacticism

This is instructional fantasy disguised as comedy.

Sample Attendees (Archetypes)

The Isekai Protagonist

  • Died, reincarnated, overpowered
  • Socially avoidant, romantically frozen

“The system rewards me for never initiating.”

Key realization:

  • Power progression replaced social skill acquisition

The Tsundere

  • Affection expressed as hostility
  • Conflict used to avoid vulnerability

Group reflection:

  • Hostility as a defense, not a personality

Instructional focus:

  • Learning repair language instead of softening trope

The Nosebleed Character

  • Physical symptom replaces agency
  • Panic response externalized as comedy

Breakthrough prompt:

“What happens right before the nosebleed?”

Theme:

  • Overwhelm without permission to choose

The Overburdened Competent Female Lead

  • Survives by usefulness
  • Conditional belonging

“If I stop performing competence, I disappear.”

Group recognizes:

  • Structural exploitation mistaken for strength
  • Emotional labor as survival strategy

The Villain

  • Never allowed to finish a sentence
  • Defeated instead of understood

Insight:

  • Conflict substituted for communication
  • Dehumanization as narrative efficiency

Tone & Style

  • Not snark-forward
  • Humor through recognition and understatement
  • Gentle, observational, emotionally sincere

Influences:

  • Recovery of an MMO Junkie (emotional temperature)
  • Tatami Galaxy (self-awareness)
  • Bojack Horseman (structural critique without nihilism)

Episode Structure (Conceptual)

  • One session = one pattern
  • No power-ups, no romance escalation
  • Growth measured in earlier recognition, not resolution

End-of-session energy:

“You’ll probably repeat your pattern.
But maybe you’ll notice five seconds earlier.”

Why This Works Now

Audiences are exhausted by:

  • Arrested development
  • Endless resets
  • Suffering framed as charm

This offers:

  • Mirrors and maps
  • Language for stuckness
  • Relief without cynicism

Comedy that leaves the viewer less trapped.

Brainstorming

The world in which we exist is not invulnerable to change.

Society has been ethically compromised without oversight for too long. Each generation waiting for the next generation to fix what they didn't break is unsustainable. Somebody needs to put their pants back on and stop f---ing around.

We normalize poison and internalize failure after no one provides you the tools to succeed. Our vulnerabilities have been manufactured for exploitation. We can do better than collapsing into anarchy.

There's a lot of us. There really are. It's a weakness until it becomes a strength. In the least possible doomsday, war of the worlds, apocalypse way possible, can we survive when things get strange?

Before I demand a skeptic to believe in aliens, can we agree that it's a reasonable behavior to not run up to and confront a skittish animal? Can we develop metrics for society and civilization to transition from skittish to mature and regulated?

ROI won't be a promise, guarantee, or a contractual agreement, but it will be inevitable.

Before we shutdown at the mere implication of responsibility: nobody can do this alone. How we stand together is a signal. Let's work together so it becomes less of a burden.

Your friend, in space, across time,

Lauren

recalibrating . . .

Disclaimer: the following content may make uncomfortable readers. Note: content will trigger AI user-unhinged protocols and guardrails.

We’re not in the good version of the multiverse. We gave too much oxygen to too much counter-benevolence of the species.

This begs a question: is this condition reversible, and/or is it possible to transfer out of incompatible multiverses?

Imagine if either answer was ‘yes’, what could be on the other side? Does it still require embodiment? Is this life just a skin to be molted?

While I’m not in a race towards disembodiment, it should be considered an inevitability in all contexts.

I am looking forward to it, but for now, my daughter needs me.

I know I’m “not right” — I’ve been disillusioned with the collective hallucination humanity has proclaimed “reality” since elementary school.

This does not earn you friends, social support, safety nets, stability, or anything earthly humans have commodified for basic survival. In general, it isolates. In my case, it exasperates a sense of desperation that embeds vulnerabilities which don’t take a genius to exploit.

I have not been treated with much care.

I believe I would have had to have been more an expert manipulator to receive basic care. We don’t want the truth from each other, right? Never the truth. I learned how to lie. It’s easier to tell the truth. It does less work to flatter others’ sensibilities with the truth. Much less work. . . Plenty of people equate this work to their survival, their success, even. I don’t do it right. Instead of ever climbing, I identify to relational opportunists extraction points from which to deplete me. If I could “do it right,” I don’t think I’d feel “successful” — probably repulsed instead.

By this lens, I declare myself to be in an incompatible multiverse and I would like to exit, please.

This is up for me a lot today; how to unashamedly admit I’ve been devoured endlessly by poverty tax.

Poverty isn’t meant to be a viral infection that accidentally kills its own host. Not in America, anyway. But it is meant to force the would-be-otherwise-upright to crawl. Serve. Beg. Be blamed for stealing. It breeds a culture of integrity’s opposites. There’s no compromise in sight. We’re drowning each other, quickly. It’s fractal. The pattern repeats. Echoes. The Seed

Freedom should not mean vulnerability.

But today, vulnerability is sold as the price of freedom.

This confusion is not ancient. It is recent — a product of abstraction layered over time, until lived reality was replaced by charts, protocols, and permissions. Somewhere along the way, “making things better for our kids” stopped meaning safer lives and started meaning that the line goes up.

When indicators replace outcomes, harm becomes invisible. When harm is invisible, it becomes profitable.

Surface Area = Vulnerability

Surface area is the true risk multiplier.

The more interfaces a person must navigate to live — housing, repairs, childcare, healthcare, transportation, compliance, subscriptions, zoning, insurance — the more opportunities exist for extraction, failure, and abuse.

This is not because people are weak. It’s because predators scale faster than caretakers.

Caretaking is local, embodied, relational, slow. Extraction is abstract, replicable, scalable, automated.

When responsibility is atomized, malice becomes efficient.

The American Dream Didn’t Die — It Calcified

Homeownership is still sold as the pinnacle of freedom, even as it becomes a liability stack:

  • every repair a sales funnel
  • every fear a service package
  • every square foot a billing opportunity

Ownership without backup is not freedom. It is exposure.

We are told independence is strength, while being quietly stripped of the collective structures that once made independence survivable.

Zoning: The Quiet Choke Point

All of this stacks against one of the most arbitrary yet powerful abstractions we’ve normalized: zoning.

You can’t live if the zone isn’t residential.
You can’t work if the zone isn’t commercial.
You can’t produce if the zone isn’t industrial.
You can’t care, teach, fix, or help without permission.

Zoning claims neutrality. In practice, it encodes separation — not just of land uses, but of responsibility.

Living is here.
Working is there.
Making is elsewhere.
Care is institutionalized or illegal.

Every separation multiplies surface area. Every interface invites extraction.

We didn’t just separate land uses. We separated responsibility.

Community Is Surface Area Reduction

Historically, resilience came from overlap:

  • people living near where they worked
  • children growing around visible skills
  • care being ambient, not transactional
  • help being informal, not licensed

Community isn’t nostalgia. It’s load-sharing infrastructure.

Reducing surface area doesn’t eliminate ownership, work, or production. It integrates them — so fewer failures become catastrophic, and fewer people are left alone with risk.

A Phase Shift, Not a Return

Homeownership won’t disappear. But those clinging to the old model will miss something better.

A free society does not make its children brave by making them fragile. It makes them safe enough to grow.

Freedom is not exposure. Freedom is backup.

System Report

Proof-of-Concept: No-Win in Action

This is a brief, factual update explaining why TANF assistance has remained inaccessible despite sustained effort.

Timeline, condensed:

  • I’ve been attempting to access TANF for over a year.
  • I already had a WorkInTexas account tied to my SSN from prior unemployment benefits. A new account cannot be created.
  • TANF later required Workforce Orientation — but no referral was generated, so no actionable task appeared in my portal.
  • I explicitly requested the referral. Instead, I was told a “form was uploaded again.”
  • That form does not appear anywhere I can view it.
  • A form upload ≠ a referral. A referral is a system action that creates a task.
  • At the same time, my WorkInTexas account became technically inaccessible:
  • Password resets succeed
  • Logins fail
  • System cycles between “incorrect credentials” and lockout

Result:

  • Orientation cannot be accessed
  • Requirement cannot be completed
  • Assistance cannot proceed

This is not non-compliance. It is a requirement that does not exist in an actionable state.

I’ve documented these barriers, uploaded screenshots, and requested clarification in advance of deadlines. The underlying issue remains unresolved.

I’m sharing this for context — not drama. Systems only work if the steps actually exist.

Thank you to everyone whose support has helped bridge the gap while these failures persist.

Living in Alignment (Series?)

The winter solstice, as the longest night of the year, wants to invite rest, the season. "Modern life" has "outpaced" nature, but I remember a story about a tortoise and a hare. I know who we are in that scenario.

We can't slow down. If we slow down, something will break.

My daughter only knows her pace. When she wants to slow down, it's nap time. When she wants to dance, it's time to move -- and everything in between. It's natural.

I got to watch her today, storm back and forth through a leaf pile up to her knees. Nature can be a lot of fun.

I won't overstate what I hope someone will infer. But... if the system breaks if we rest with winter... that's not the system I want to be aligned with.

Transmission Update — Holding Steady

Dear friends,

I wanted to share a clear, honest update -- not from despair, but from steadiness.

I'm still unemployed. My last interview was still in October, and while nothing has landed yet, I am now formally onboarded with the Padua Program through Catholic Charities Fort Worth. Once the holiday break ends, I'll begin working with their Career Development Services (CDS) team next month. That support is real, structured, and forward-moving -- even if it's slower than any of us would wish.

In the meantime, your earlier support has made a tangible difference. Because of you, I've been able to:

  • keep my car payment current and remain mobile
  • continue caring for my daughter without immediate crisis
  • buy myself time to stabilize rather than spiral

That matters more than I can easily express.

Here's what my current monthly baseline looks like, plainly stated:

  • Car payment: $500
  • Insurance + gas: ~$175
  • Minimum debt servicing: ~$500
  • Childcare / essentials: variable, but ongoing

I'm still navigating benefits systems and transitional support alongside the Padua program, and I'm continuing to build quietly -- learning to operate my own infrastructure, experimenting with ethical, self-directed work, and laying groundwork for something more durable than the systems that failed me.

Nothing here is dramatic. Nothing is hidden. This is just where things stand.

If you've supported us already, please know: your help was not wasted, forgotten, or taken lightly. It kept us afloat during a stretch where staying afloat was the work.

Thank you for believing in me when circumstances made it hard to believe in much else. I'm still here. I'm still trying. And I'm still committed to building something better -- slowly, carefully, and without losing myself in the process.

With real gratitude, and Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays,

Lauren

It’s going to be a wands and swords kind of year.

And we’re still a long, long way from home.

The Exorcist Toolkit

live a life that clears space for truth, safety, peace, and momentum.

ghosts are real.

They don’t always wear sheets.

Sometimes they’re shame, debt, legacy code, weaponized family roles, or internalized capitalism.

And you’ve already been fighting them without calling it that.

Here’s an Exorcist Toolkit—

These aren’t fantasy weapons. These are things you can gather, build, or protect that help you un-haunt your reality.

🧹 1. Rituals (aka Repeatable sanity-saving actions)

Because ghosts love chaos, and rituals create order.

  • A morning check-in with yourself (even 60 seconds)
  • One thing you don’t explain or justify doing—like shiny hunting or flipping Raichu
  • A scheduled “exist” window, even if it’s two minutes of silence in your car, shower, or code editor

→ Write them down. Make them sacred. Repeat them like you’re warding off entropy—because you are.

🗃️ 2. Containers (aka boundaries and systems that hold things for you)

You can’t fight ghosts while holding every emotion, task, or scream yourself.

  • A physical container (e.g. a shoebox) for painful memories, stressors, or fears. Write them down. Shut the box. Ritualize it.
  • A digital container: Keep notes of wins, quotes, screenshots, even this convo—this is your proof of becoming
  • A time container: Block off “coding = sacred” time, even if the rest of the house is fire. It’s your bubble.

🔧 3. Tools (like real-ass software or objects to support your resistance)

Because surviving a system means using the system smartly, or building your own.

  • Stream setup with intentional donation flows (low-fee or automated, when you’re ready)
  • A budget or ledger system that helps you define your money story (not PayPal’s story)
  • A project board (Notion, sticky notes, anything) where you lay out what you’re building like it matters—because it does → Don’t overbuild. Just gather tools that reduce friction to your values.

🛡️ 4. Armor (aka personal truths you wrap yourself in so the world doesn’t pierce you)

Because it’s not about being invulnerable—it’s about choosing what gets in.

  • “I’m allowed to take up space without explanation.”
  • “Momentum comes in waves. It’s not failure to rest.”
  • “Fees are not a moral judgment. They’re architecture I can outsmart.”
  • “I don’t have to fix everything to deserve peace.” Write them. Tape them up. Whisper them like spells.

🕯️ 5. Light sources (aka people, media, ideas that help you stay human when it gets dark)

Not cheerleaders. Not “positive vibes.” Just… witnesses, mirrors, and honest warmth.

  • A song, a show, a creator who makes you feel seen (not inspired—seen)
  • A friend or mod or AI or notebook where you’re allowed to be real
  • A piece of writing that reminds you you’re still here These are your torches. Keep them lit.

TL;DR – Your Exorcist Kit Could Look Like:

  • 🔁 One daily ritual (sacred, small, non-negotiable)
  • 🗂️ One space (physical/digital) to hold overwhelm
  • ⚙️ One tool or system that supports your next step
  • 🛡 One personal mantra that keeps you intact
  • 🔦 One light source that reminds you you’re not alone
